Report

Kunal told us that the elims would be fairly simple and displayed a lesser seen side of the Dunning-Kruger effect where people with superior ability in a task assume it is equally easy for others. To put it simply, the elims were not at all simple and the spectre of self-doubt was haunting every quizzer present after the first few questions because nobody seemed to be getting anything. This improved in the latter half and questions became accessible. Ingit sir and Gadre topped the elims with an outrageous (for us) score of 14, with the main draw cut-off at 9 and the draft cut-off at 6.

The finals were really good with Kunal having hit his question setting stride. The quiz had due apologies to Faiz Ahmed Faiz as its tagline and there was no India shit. The western fundae were sufficiently popular to qualify as 'popular'-culture. The quiz had a decent amount of AV content which made it less taxing than dry quizzes tend to be. Team 5 picked up where they left off in the elims and were cruising throughout the quiz. Teams 1, 2 and 4 were reasonably close at the halfway mark before Team 5 pulled clearly ahead.

The only crib one would have was the difficulty level in the elims which could have been rectified with timely guinea-pigging. Apart from that, it was an enjoyable quiz. We hope Kunal turns this into at least a biennial event rather than a quinquennial one.

The BCQC May Open - Pop Culture Quiz results

The First Annual APJ Abdul Kalam Quiz for Outstanding Achievements in the Field of Excellence

Set and Conducted by Kunal Sawardekar and Dr. Aditya Chandorkar

Format: Due to several changes in venue and time, the quiz had to be shifted to a new location at the last minute. Only 15 people showed up. QMs decided to have everyone in the finals and use the elims as a written round. This was followed by the intended final - 38 Questions on IR (with 8 pounces per team) , one written round and one theme round.

Results:
1st: Kaustubh Bhat and Aditya Gadre: 122.5 pts
Jt 2nd: Debanjan Bose and Hari Nair : 115 pts
Jt 2nd: Ranajeet Soman , Rohan Jain (and Avaneendra Bhargav as super sub) : 115 pts
4th: Venkat S (aka Vcat) and Nikhil Motlag: 70 pts
5th: Abhishek Upadhyay M and Rohan Danait: 60 pts
6th: Ananth and Aditya: 50 pts
7th: Tejas and Tanvi: 10 pts

Review:

The Quiz was brilliant IMO - great fundaes, popular topics and a lot of fun through production value with memes, references in everything from the very name of the quiz to the safety slides and names of rounds. The extensive usage of AV was particularly impressive - and I mean that not just through the sheer number of videos but the fact that several videos had superb workoutable answers which did not need any particular knowledge of the video per se.

Another huge positive for me was that the quiz was run at a leisurely Pune pace - going on for a good four hours - giving teams enough time to think and workout questions thus justifying the effort the QMs had put in.

A few negatives:
- A few inconsistencies in part points
- A few outliers in terms of difficulty level - several teams did not take guesses because they did not expect that the answer would be that obvious
- Some questions leaned more towards "culture" than "popular" :P

Please give your feedback in the comments section.
The QMs intend to run the quiz elsewhere, so please do not give out any content of the questions or answers in your feedback.
