Prelims cut-off: 6 (1 star) for the top 6, 4.5 for the draft picks

Report: The only disappointment of the quiz was, contrary to what was displayed on the quiz's publicity material, there was no question on a certain Ajay Singh Deol (there was a question on "Deool", though). A tough prelims for the participants, with only one team getting into double figures (Kunal & Debo, who veered to the other extreme of scariness scoring 17, whereas the 2nd highest team had 9). In the final, Team D looked comfortable in the first 2 rounds, but went off the pace in the last. The exact opposite happened to Team E, resulting in their win.

Some very interesting questions - my favourites being the ones on the Emmy Awards, the one about Boris Becker, and "the Kiss".

June Open Quizzes

The BCQC is organising two open quizzes in June. Details:

Date: 15 June 2014 (Sunday)
Venue: Seminar Hall, Academic Complex., COEP, Pune (next to the BC). For the first ever time in BCQC history, we have to declare a dress code(!): full-length trousers for guys, as COEP has become finicky about not allowing people wearing shorts in the Complex.

Quiz 1: "Flags of the World"

Theme: um, flags of the world

Format: written, for all teams

Registration: free, open to all

Teams: teams of two members each, but we're going to experiment this time by randomly pairing together all participants (gives you a chance to team up with someone new)

When: 3:30 pm to 5:45 pm 

Theme: Music, Entertainment, Literature, Arts, Sports (i.e. a Lt. General Quiz)

Format: written prelims, followed by final for 6 teams

Draft Picks: participants from the best three college teams not to qualify will join the top 6 teams 

Registration: free, open to all

Since there were only 17 people who showed up, we decided to randomise teams and have everyone in the final. The intended elims were run as 3 written rounds

Four teams were within 5 pts of each other at the half-way mark, following which Suraj Menon and team pulled away to win quite comfortably. 4 teams were in contention for 2nd and 3rd spots till the last 2 questions - with Kunal and team getting the second last question to beat Suraj Prabhu and the Omkars while Shivam and Alok got the last question to cement 2nd place.

Qonnoisseur- The MELA Quiz at COEP's MindSpark 2012

Positives:

- The quiz was a huge contrast from Chakravyuh the previous day - the effort in setting the quiz was apparent.
- The quiz started off with a nice elims set - a few questions could have been better framed but overall a good effort.
- The elims were engaging and well conducted - a big thumbs up for a lot of visual content as well
- The finals had quite a few nice questions - and most questions were well framed
- The ppt was well thought out - everything we needed was on the slides
- The caricatures round was really nice
- Overall the quiz was light and interesting - most teams seemed to like it.

Negatives:

- After reminders and announcements that the quiz has been advanced to 10am, it started at 11 am anyway.
- The quiz (elims + finals) was a bit of a disappointment on the balance front as it turned out to be very Hollywood heavy. Very few questions on music, other entertainment, TV or arts. Nearly nothing at all on India.
- Lack of AV content in the finals
- Some peters here and there - could have been avoided by getting the questions reviewed by resident EntGawds
- Content-wise my only major issue with the quiz was the theme - the connection was extremely loose and possibly even worse lexical. In general "movies of XYZ" make for horrible themes, and this was one. The QM could have explored so much more in a quiz on Music, Entertainment, Literature and Arts - and it saddens me that the theme was also a Hollywood based theme.
- The theme like Chakravyuh was ridiculously high on weightage in terms of points (60!) thus favouring Gary Oldman like crazy. Themes should never have more than 2-3 questions weightage IMO.

The quiz turned out to be quite close with all teams at almost identical scores at the halfway mark - three teams (Swapnil & Akib, Rohan & Ranajeet and us) pulled away in the second half only. Before going into the theme, we were leading, R&R were second. S&A and K&A leapfrogged us on the theme round to take 1st and 2nd respectively.
