Events at Landmark, Pune for children

Landmark, Pune is organising two events for children as part of its Summer Carnival programme. The content for the events is by Nexus Consulting. Ramanand is hosting the events on their behalf. Details:

27 Apr (3-5 pm) at the SGS Mall store - Tintin Treasure Hunt - ages 9-12 yrs - teams of 3 (if you don't have a team, don't worry - we can find a team for you). The Treasure Hunt is not a quiz, but a game in which the children will have to hunt for answers within Tintin comics (which will be provided by the store). Seats for the Tintin Treasure Hunt may be limited, based on space and other constraints. At least 10 teams will be formed.

28 Apr (3-5 pm) at the Phoenix Market City store - Geography Genius (a quiz) - ages 12-15 - teams of 2

COEP Quiztronomy 2012 - Report

Report by the COEP Astronomy Club:

The CoEP Astronomy club in association with the Boat Club Quiz Club conducted Quiztronomy – the annual astronomy themed quiz. It includes all aspects of astronomy, it’s fiction, it’s mythology. Held in the CoEP campus, this quiz sees a wide participation from different schools and colleges in Pune.

The quiz took place on 4th February, 2012 and received a good response. Around 40 teams participated which had to crack a set of 25 questions for the elimination round. Based on this, 6 teams made it to the final. The final round comprised of 36 questions all on varied topics related to astronomy and astrophysics.

Prizes worth Rs.15,000 were awarded to the winners and finalists. The first prize winners - Omkar Moghe and Swapnil Phulse of CoEP – received trophies along with cash prize of Rs. 2000 and Landmark vouchers worth Rs. 3000. The Symbiosis school, which had the maximum participation, was given the Best Contingent Award and was given vouchers worth Rs. 500. The audience was also made a part of the quiz. Questions were directed to the members in the audience and prizes were given out for every correct attempt.

The event was hosted by Gautam Akiwate, Payas Awadhutkar and Omkar Yarguddi – members of the CoEP Astronomy Club. Dr. S.T. Vagge , Dean, Student Activities , graced the occasion with his presence. The quiz was highly appreciated by the participants and the club members.

Mahaquizzer 2011

"Mahaquizzer" is India's biggest solo quiz. This year's edition will be held on the 29th of May (Sunday) from 10 am. Brief comments:
* Quiz was organised by the makers of the Heritage India magazine; the participants were from Pune schools in the age-group of 5th to 7th standards
* About 20-25 teams from about 8-10 schools participated
* Though tight at the beginning, Orchid pulled away from the rest in the second IR round and maintained their lead throughout
* As is always the case with school children, lots of enthusiastic kids, some of them very-well informed, and already showing the ability to guess and work-out. Only a handful of questions went unanswered, and not one was 'pass'-ed.
* Sevasadan topped the prelims with 16 out of 30. The cut-off was 14.
* Prizes sponsored by Heritage India, a local publisher (Saraswati Publishers, I think), and BCQC sponsored the 4th prize (because there was none).

Format: 48 questions seamless IR , 8 question written theme round.

The quiz was a very closely fought one with the top three finishing within 30 points.
St Mary's put on a great show and steadily built up their momentum to take the lead in the third round . They didn't let it go throughout the quiz with some brilliant answers and deservedly won. Abhinav and Symbiosis started slowly with Loyola and Vincents fighting for 2nd and 3rd place .
At the end of the 8th round Mary's had quite a comfortable lead , Loyola and Abhinav were tied for second and Kalmadi had just got their act together and leapfrogged Vincents to third place.
The theme round probabaly had a bit too much weightage (40 pts for cracking the theme early)considering that the top team had scored just 65 points in 48 questions. Symbiosis cracked the theme on their second shot and went into the joint lead . Mary's cracked it on their third shot and took back the sole lead. Abhinav soon cracked the theme themselves and completed the top three .

The atmosphere was awesome though the crowd seemed a little disappointed at the end that Abhinav didn't win. Salil did a great job of conducting the quiz and completed the quiz on time .

The Best School Trophy was given to the School whose top 3 teams had the highest combined elimination Score.

Quiz Masters: Yash Marathe, Maitreyi Gupta

Elims: 30 questions, 6 stars. Highest was 20 and the cut off was 15 with 5 stars. Lots of teams scored between 12 and 15 so it turned out to be an average difficulty elim

Quiz Master’s notes:

1. Good turnout in spite of on-going tests in some schools. 80 teams is no small figure. A few schools sent as many as 10 teams.

2. Teams reported on time. Can’t say the same about some of the quizmasters ;)

3. Cash prizes were a big plus point. Audience prizes were BCQC keychains. Trophies for the winning team and best school.

4. Quiz started on time and ended at 1pm instead of 12.30. We lost time in the elims. Elims should have been 25 ques rather than 30.

5. We made a lot of new questions for this quiz. Tried to keep as many workable questions as possible.

6. Quiz was liberally sprinkled with pictures to support the answers.

7. Choice of elim questions: they were meant to be easy – turned out to be of moderate difficulty.

8. I think we covered most genres. Even so, the emphasis was on geography and history.

9. New format for the elim sheet – sheet included a space for rough work (questions were displayed on the screen), for jotting down the question or to note multiple answers before deciding the final one. There was a points column as well. The aim was to reduce checking time and increase accuracy of checking.

10. We should have made a filler quiz – for around 10 mins after we finished discussing answers, teams were moving around the audi to sit with their school friends (we had separated them in the beginning)

11. Lack of volunteers due to various reasons – too much work for the few people who did show up.

12. A few goof-ups in the finals because of me : 2 finals’ questions were scrapped because I accidentally clicked a button.

13. Round 1 was a connect round – each question should have carried 5 points rather than 10. Some teams who cracked the connect had got an unfair lead.

14. Note to self and others: Most black and white pictures don’t show up well on the screen.

Earlier there would be semifinals and a grand finale with a celebrity QM but for the past few years the finals have been conducted b Brian Tellis. This time there were no semis but a direct 6-team final after elims.

Report

* The 3rd ACES quiz was also the second time the BC was involved. The flavour of the quiz was sports + general
* Kalmadi Shamrao and Abhinava also had the best contingents, with about 6 teams from these schools missing out because of the only-one-team-per-school-in-finals rule. Perhaps a end of season Derby between these two teams should be held! They are clearly the two best quizzing schools in the city today.
* Though Kalmadi Shamrao chased Abhinava all the way, drawing level a couple of times after being far behind, Abhinava never lost the lead after picking it up in the end of the 1st quarter
* The organisation was excellent and smooth. Compared to last year, the turnout was very high, with about 60 teams from 15 schools showing up. The hall was packed during the finals with an enthusiastic audience.
* The quiz had a single "Aldus Manutius" theme round (images that spelt out the name of a sportsman, with five such sportsmen to be connected). A small rapid-fire "free throw" round was held for all teams, with one person coming forward to answer 4 questions each. There were four "quarters" in the quiz, each of 10 qns each.
* Last year's report. With this win, Abhinava successfully wrested back the ACES trophy which they lost to DES last time.
* Many thanks to Abhinava Principal Mrs. Pai, teacher-in-charge Mrs. Gandhi and the volunteer teachers and students for the fine show and the opportunity to do a quiz for school students.
